Hi there, Late this afternoon (3:00 - 3:30 pm) I birded around Trail Rd in the west-end of Ottawa.
Of the 4 Red-tailed Hawks present in the area, one adult in particular was quite eye-catching: Buffy upperparts, dark throat, and was quite dark dorsally. I took several photos of it and then headed home. At the time, I didn't think it was anything beyond a "Northern-type" adult. When I arrived home, I uploaded my photos, reviewed them, and, to my surprise, the "Northern-type" mentioned above showed a lovely calurus tail; red tail, wavy bands, and a thick, black subterminal band! In any case, if it cannot be safely identified as a Western, it certainly shows a calurus-type tail. Raw, unedited pics available. Directions, as per those provided on Neilyworld: From Highway 416 take exit 66 (Fallowfield Road). If southbound, a 0.4 km offramp dumps onto Fallowfield, where you will turn right or west. If northbound, the 0.4 km offramp brings you to Fallowfield, where you will turn left or west onto it and in 0.5 km join the southbound offramp traffic. Both groups will now follow Fallowfield Road west for an additional 0.4 km to reach Moodie Drive. Turn left or southeast onto Moodie Drive and go roughly 5.0 km. Trail Rd will be on your left. Good birding, Jon Ruddy _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
