Marianne Reid-Balkwill joined me for the entire count. Weather: A very cold day on the tower! Temperature ranged from -8 to -3 degrees. Winds were out of the WNW and NW throughout the day with speeds of up to 13km/h. The day started with clear skies with 70% cloud cover later in the afternoon. Raptor Observations: A good flight today on account of the northwest winds. 64 raptors total of 7 species. Highlights included 45 Red-tailed Hawks (mostly adults), a juvenile Golden Eagle as the first raptor of the day, and 5 Red-shouldered Hawks. Non-raptor Observations: Passerine numbers were lower than other days, perhaps because of the strong western winds. Highlights included 24 Sandhill Cranes and a flock of 28 Pine Siskins. The marsh was frozen today so waterfowl numbers were lower than usual. The full list of today's species can be seen on eBird: http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S15751105 Predictions: Tomorrow's temperature is predicted to have a high of -1 degrees with a 40% chance of precipitation in the afternoon and SW winds all day. Fewer raptors than today can be expected. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jeremy Hatt ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
