While looking for the possible Yellow-legged Gull late this afternoon, we
(Willie D'Anna et al) observed a first winter Glaucous Gull and an adult
Kumlein's Gull mid-river and a probable Lesser Black-backed x Herring Gull
Hybrid on the Breakwall. In fact the probable hybrid did superficially
show some similarities to an "atlantis" Yellow-legged Gull (head-streaking
and mantle shade) except that since it was asleep the bill or legs were not
visible! I have seen Josh's photo since and we were definitely seeing
different birds.

The key to finding rarities on the Niagara River is development of
extensive experience on the enormous variation in American Herring Gull,
Lesser Black-backed Gull and any possible hybrids.
