Visitors:
A few visitors today...Brian and Doloris Mishell and Ken. Thanks to all
those who helped with today's spotting and counting....Mac, Mary, Ronnie,
Don C., Tom T. and Peter B. and getting the report submitted.
Weather:
Mostly sunny today with some cloud. Winds mostly ENE and E at 15 kph and
then dropping slightly to 10 kph. Temp got to a high of 7C.
Raptor Observations:
Another excellent flight today as the winds hung in from the ENE and E
giving the birds a tailwind as they migrated westward. The total birds for
today was 2,927. Another big push of Redtails (1,429) and a good count of
Red-shoulders (283). Lots more accipiters again today as well with a fairly
constant flow of Sharpies (117), a small number of Cooper's Hawks (10) and
another couple of N. Goshawks. There were singles of Osprey, Rough-legged
Hawk, Kestrel and a Golden Eagle. The other species seen included Bald
Eagles (7) and N. Harriers (8)...and the usual flight of TVs (1067) for
this point in the season.
Non-raptor Observations:
Omitted from yesterday's non-raptor observations was a very late Tree
Swallow in trees across from Sharpie Alley. A big highlight from today was
a Northern Shrike sighting, which is a new species for Hawk Cliff for this
season. Thanks to Mac for these sightings as well as today's 2 Eastern
Meadowlarks. Thanks also to Tom T. and Don for today's Sandhill Cranes,
heard early in the afternoon and finally viewed at the end of the day.
Also from today in the "Others that we know are around, but don't see every
day" category were Wood Duck, Pileated woodpecker, Brown Creeper, Hermit
Thrush and a singing Northern Cardinal. In addition, observers reported
Killdeer, Hairy, Downy & Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Black-capped Chickadee,
American Goldfinch, Common Loon, Mourning Dove, Blue Jay, Horned Lark,
Eastern Bluebird, Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglet, American Pipit,
Yellow-rumped Warblerand both White-throated & Song Sparrow. Flocks of
Red-winged Blackbirds, European Starlings, American Robins and American
Crows were seen flying westward.
