Weather: Hot, hot, hot. Certainly one of the hottest days I've spent by the lake. Temperatures reached highs in the low 90s by the late afternoon. Cloud cover was nonexistant and the wind was light and out of the southwest. Raptor Observations: As one might expect with such sweltering conditions, there was little movement to speak of. Sharp-shinned Hawks were the only species to be seen with anything approaching regularity. Non-raptor Observations: Songbird migration continues to be limited. Several large flocks of Red- winged Blackbirds (350+) passed overhead in the morning. Small numbers of American Goldfinch, Mourning Dove, Northern Flicker, Common Grackle, Purple Martin, Chimney Swift, Barn Swallow and Tree Swallow were also on the move. Predictions: Temps in the 80s, partly cloudy, moderate southwest winds and a 60 percent chance of afternoon rain. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
