Colin and his 2 young daughters came up and enjoyed views of Great Egret and Mute Swan. Bill from Southern California came up to the tower for half an hour while his wife stayed on the ground and pointed out a Northern Harrier. They said they will definately plan to spend more time here next year. Weather: A clear sky all day with temperatures ranging from 17 - 25C. Moderate winds out of the west until 11:00 a.m. EST when they shifted from the south-west where they remained during the rest of the count period. Barometric pressure was steady around 30.00 in Hg. Raptor Observations: 23 birds of 7 species. Highlights were a female Merlin that came in right over the tower and strafed the plastic owl; and, a migrating Osprey that dared to stop and catch a fish near where one of the resident 1st year and adult Bald Eagles were roosting. Junior BE attempted to snatch the fish from the Osprey. The adult showed Junior how it is really done! Non-raptor Observations: A fairly slow passerine day. Cedar Waxwings were the dominate migrant at 253 birds. Firsts for the year included: 1 Common Nighthawk; 1 Blue Jay; 2 Bank Swallow; singles of Yellow, Pine and Wilson's Warbler; and, 2 Red-winged Blackbird. 4 Monarch Butterfly Predictions: A potentially good migration day with winds at 20km/hr out of the north in the a.m. and NE in the p.m. Temperatures are predicted to range from 14 - 21C. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Todd Pepper ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
