After more than an hour of virtual silence a flurry of activity broke out on Langstaff road north of Kendal.
Something flushed a massive amount of birds out of the row of Spruce Trees on the west side of the road at 12:30pm. 14 Pine Grosbeaks in one tree, and certainly more elsewhere. A group of 10 landed on the road to pick up grit after the chorus of alarm calls from Nuthatches, Chickadees and Juncos died down. At least 8 Evening grosbeaks remained relatively high in the trees. A few common redpolls and a heard only red-bellied woodpecker rounded out the group. With birds in every tree (primarily juncos and chickadees), it was a challenge to sort through them all. Finally picked up the long-staying star of the show with eye level view of the Townsend's Solitaire moving about in the Ravine. After about 20 minutes, the show was over and the mass of birds started filing back to pick through the Spruce Trees in Silence. Directions: 401 to 35/115, exiting for Ganaraska road, and then proceeding north on Langstaff to 8700 range (check the ravine on the east side of the road, and have some patience).
