Total observation time: 6.5 hours
Official Counter: Justin Bosler
Observers: Bob Pettit, Claude Radley, Donny Moore, Larry Ludwicki,
Paul Pratt
Visitors:
Paul Pratt had a small group out on a field trip this morning. Donny
Moore's help with spotting during the "big" push was much appreciated.
Larry Ludwicki and Bob Pettit were out for the afternoon. In all, we had
over 30 visitors to the Tower today. Another nice turnout as a result of
the lovely weather.
Weather:
A beautiful day to be on the Tower. Partly to mostly cloudy skies with a
persistent haze, temps. rapidly increasing to about 11C from a low of 4.5C,
and a light SE to SSE wind at 1-10 kph dominated throughout the day.
Raptor Observations:
A nice flight materialized just after 11:00 AM and came to a screeching
halt a little after 1:00 PM. Over half of today's raptors passed in the
noon hour. The "Point", just to the northeast of the Tower, happened to be
where the flight line was situated today. Among the more numerous
Red-tailed Hawks were over a dozen Red-shouldered Hawks. One immature Bald
Eagle passed low to north in the noon hour. No glimpses of the elusive Gyr
today, but we did have a Merlin speed thru shortly after 11:00 AM.
Non-raptor Observations:
The most notable non-raptors, aside from winter finches, included an adult
Northern Shrike and a latish Eastern Phoebe.
Several small flocks of Common Redpolls (~80 birds) passed today between
the numerous flocks of American Goldfinches (300+ birds). Only a handful of
Pine Siskins were noted.
Predictions:
Mostly cloudy in the morning giving way to partly cloudy skies with a high
of 9C. Winds will continue out of the SE, ranging from 10-15 kph.
