There have been only a few reports submitted to me in the past two
weeks, with many naturalists turning their attention to other things
while they await the coming migration season. Nothing really out of
the ordinary to report here, perhaps with exception of a CAROLINA WREN
at the Amherst Island ferry dock. Shorebirds continue to be found at
numerous locations.

Amherst Island
Shorebirds at the Kingston Field Naturalists' property included both
YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, SANDERLING, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER,
LEAST SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER and WILSON'S SNIPE. Other species
included 2 GADWALL, GREEN HERON, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, GREAT HORNED
OWL, 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS and 1 CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW. A CAROLINA WREN
was at the ferry dock on the mainland.

Amherstview Sewage Lagoons
Notable birds were GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON, AMERICAN BLACK DUCK,
BLUE-WINGED TEAL, NORTHERN SHOVELER, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, LESSER SCAUP,
GREEN HERON, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, both YELLOWLEGS, SEMIPALMATED,
LEAST, PECTORAL and STILT SANDPIPERS, WILSON'S PHALAROPE and 140
BONAPARTE'S GULLS.

Opinicon Road
Birding had slowed right down along Opinicon Road. A TRUMPETER SWAN
was still on Lake Opinicon. COMMON NIGHTHAWKS and EASTERN
WHIP-POOR-WILLS were still active and tending to fledglings along the
Cataraqui Trail.

Salmon Island
A rare visit to Salmon Island (off shore of Kingston) by several
birders found SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 4 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 1 SANDERLING and
1 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER.

Thank you to those who contributed observations this week. All bird
sightings reported to me are included in the Kingston Field
Naturalists’s long term records database which has over 60 years of
observations on file and is an invaluable conservation resource.
