Hi birders, Yesterday afternoon (July 21) Ken Burrell and I found a grebe off of the lookout behind Bird Studies Canada (BSC) Headquarters in Port Rowan. The golden/yellow horns/ears were noticeable indicating that it was a Horned or Eared Grebe. We believed that it had a black neck and had a peaked crown, which would indicate an Eared Grebe. However, due to distance, heat shimmer and the bird frequently diving, we weren't confident in our identification.
I understand that David Bell has re-found the bird today and was able to confirm it as an Eared Grebe. An adult male Greater Scaup was also seen, yesterday, at the same location. Also of note were 6 adult Little Gulls at Port Burwell beach. Good birding, Alvan (www.alvanbuckley.blogspot.com) Ken (www.kenburrell.blogspot.com) David (www.ssmbirding.blogspot.com) Directions: The BSC headquarters property is on Front Rd. 500 m east of HWY 59, on the western edge of Port Rowan. You can park your car here and walk 300m along the gravel trail to the lake where there is a lookout (GPS coordinates 42.614428,-80.455134). _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
