Over the past two days I've been seeing a raft of 25 or more Ruddy Ducks in front of Peche Island as viewed from Lakeview Park Marina in Windsor. Here is a report of some of what I saw at each stop along my walk from the marina to the Ganatchio Trail and Little River Extension to the stormwater pond this evening from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
from marina: lots of BONAPARTE'S GULLs, a KINGFISHER on Peche Island, BUFFLEHEAD, DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANTS from Shanfield Shores Park: RUDDY DUCK, GR SCAUP, Canada Goose, Mallard from Sandpoint beach looking at the Detroit River: MUTE SWAN, CANADA GOOSE, BUFFLEHEAD, BALD EAGLE (being chased by a RING BILLED GULL, probably for the fish it was carrying) following the Ganatchio Trail Little River extension under the Wyandotte Street bridge to the stormwater pond, on and over the pond I found: RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD males, TREE SWALLOW, a freaky looking duck with a MUSCOVY face, BUFFLEHEAD (6), RUDDY DUCK (4), NORTHERN SHOVELER (7), MUTE SWAN (2), MALLARD (4), GREAT BLUE HERON (1), KILLDEER (2) including one engaging in distraction display, PIED BILLED GREBE (2), female COMMON MERGANSER (1). Since this pond is right next to the trail, it's a great chance for up-close shots of beautiful ducks. Good birding! Kelly Morrissey, Windsor The Ganatchio Trail and Little River extension are accessible from the parking lot at the intersection of Riverside Drive East and Florence Ave. It is 4.5 km west of Manning Road and 10.7 km east of the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
