Large numbers of loons are concentrated in the Amherst ferry channel. Other
areas are reporting groups of loons including 17 on Lake Opinicon yesterday
along with a Red-throated; very unusual in the back lakes north of Kingston.
There were several grebes at Prince Edward Point on Hallowe'en including 2
Red-necked. A Great Egret was on Amherst on Wednesady, a Green Heron was at
Davis Lake (near QUBS) yesterday and 3 Sandhill Cranes fed in a cornfield near
Crosby last Tuesday.
Waterfowl highlights included a large flock of Snow Geese on Amherst and a
couple of Common Goldeneye in Navy Bay on Tuesday, 400 Ring-necked Ducks at
Pothole Lake and a single Brant with Canadas on the penitentiary property
yesterday.
There were still four species of shorebird at the sewage lagoons but nothing
rare or unexpected.
It has been a good week for Northern Shrikes with 3 at PEPt on the 31st and
then singletons on Amherst and the Orser Road. Pine Siskins and Purple Finches
continue to trickle through in ones and twos. A lone Evening Grosbeak was near
Morton last Saturday. As a final acknowledgment of approaching winter there
were 8 Snow Buntings at the lagoons on Tuesday and 9 Rough-legged Hawks on
Amherst on Wednesday.
The KFN is doing their annual fall round-up this weekend.
Cheers,
Peter Good
