Between snow showers this afternoon I went down to the West Side Marshes Conservation Area to check on the status of the resident Ospreys. Both birds were back and the female(?) was busy repairing the nest. Also seen at the Osprey pond was a Caspian Tern. A little further down the road I was pleasantly surprised to see my first for the year Brown Thrashers
Jim Yaki Bowmanville, ON [email protected] Directions: exit the 401 at Liberty St in Bowmanville. Just south of the 401 turn east onto Lake Rd. Take the first right, Port Darlington Rd for a few hundred yards and then right again, just after the railroad crossing, onto West Beach Rd. Follow West Beach Rd around the marsh. Just before you reach Lake Ontario turn right onto Cove Rd. After a couple of hundred yards you will come to a one lane bridge. Park on the right before the bridge. The Osprey poles are in the pond on the north side. The nest is on the 3rd pole counting from east to west. To get to the place the thrashers were carry on across the bridge. Cove Rd becomes Cedar Crest Rd which ends about a kilometer farther at a little loop called Watson Crescent. The thrashers were in the patch of woods on the north east corner of Cedar crest and Watson, 20ft or so from the road. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
