Observed a gorgeous, white-phase gyrfalcon hovering 20 ft over a field in
Thorold this morning (intersection of Barron and Allanport Road). Absolutely
unmistakable! Although not rare for the rest of Ontario, this is the very
southern fringe of the winter range for this species and they are uncommon in
this area of Niagara. Hope this notification may help others in the city/area
identify it if they're lucky enough to see it moving through, as these birds
tend to be quite nomadic in the winter. This may sound ridiculous for an
experienced birder, but if it wasn't for the fact that this bird was hovering
ready to dive onto a mouse, I probably would have driven by it too quickly and
mistook it for a seagull!!
