I had a short-eared owl on Moore Rd. outside of Ridgetown in Chatham-Kent at 10:00 am this morning. The bird was spooked from it's roost by a fox that was stalking it. This is a scene I have never encountered in my entire birding life.
The owl was roosting on the East side of Moore Rd. in scrub lining the ditch. It flew to a tree plantation north of the site that is part of a horse farm on the corner of Reeders Line and Moore Rd. Of note, short-eared owls are few in number but reliably in the fields outside of Ridgetown at this time of year. To reach the area, take the 401 to exit 109 Victoria Road. Go south until the road bends to the right into the town. Stay south on Victoria road which will cross Reeders Line and becomes Moore Rd. The bird was directly south of the horse farm.
