Weather: Starting off partly cloudy then turning overcast by late morning. Winds were steady out of the NE 10-12 km/hr with a high of 11C. Raptor Observations: A slow, sporadic day despite the NE winds and lack of rain, although not entirely unexpected given it is becoming that (late) time of year. Small numbers of Red-tails passed through along with 4 Cooper's Hawks and 2 each of Sharp-shins and Harriers. Highlights were a sub-adult Golden Eagle that lumbered through over the marsh at 11:28 and nice overhead looks at 3 (light) Rough-legged Hawks. Also of note was the late local Osprey that put in an appearance over the distant NW treeline during the 9:00 hour. Non-raptor Observations: Am. Crows were moving heavily during the first 2 hours of the count with 7,655 tallied. A fair number of Grackles (316) and Red-winged Blackbirds (67) also passed by overhead, while "local" flocks of Rusty Blackbirds continue to fly back and forth past the tower. Small numbers of Bufflehead (6) and C. Goldeneyes (5) are continuing to become daily regulars out on the lake as well. Predictions: Partly sunny becoming cloudy in the afternoon with a 70% chance of showers. Wind NW 40 km/hr becoming W 20 in the afternoon with a high of 11C. Should be some raptors on the move if the rain holds off till the late afternoon. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jim Pawlicki ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
