About 8.15 this morning, from our dining room window, I saw a Sharp- shinned Hawk fly pass our house on Coronation Crescent - a portent, as it happened.

Down at Cobourg Harbour, between 8.45 and 9.45 am, I saw little out of the ordinary except right in the centre of the outer harbour a non- descript, non-breeding Lesser Scaup. As I was leaving the area, from the base of the East side pier, 3 more Sharpies flew over.

I then drove over to Lucas Point Park, on the east side of town, which I had heard was good for migrating raptors. Between about 10.00 and 11.25 am, flying along the bluff, I saw a total of: 19 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 2 Cooper's Hawks, 2 Turkey Vultures, 1 Osprey and 1 Merlin. Just as I was about to get back onto Hwy 2 to return home, another Merlin flew past.

All the birds were flying more or less from east to west which was the prevailing wind direction at the time.

Directions:
Cobourg is accessible from exits 472 and 474 of the Hwy 401. The Harbour is at the base of George Street and Division Street (3.5 km from exit 474). For the Lucas Point Park area, go eastwards from downtown Cobourg on King Street East (Hwy 2) and then turn south onto Willmott Street towards L. Ontario. There is a small parking lot on the cliff about 1.3 km along Willmott St..
