Greetings Birders, Based on the success of Cheryl Edgecombe, Dave Don and Rob Dobos, Kyle Holloway and myself went looking for shorebirds on Fifth Rd E. in Saltfleet.
We were not disappointed. There were numerous Killdeer and we eventually got onto three Wilson's Snipe in the west part of the field. As we exited the car hopes of getting our scopes on them, it took us an additional fifteen or so minutes to re-locate the birds...so they definitely require some searching to find - the camouflage is incredible. I'm sure there may have been more. The early Lesser Yellowlegs was also there, noisily flying in from the field to east of the stop sign. Killdeer were numerous, but we did not find any Pectoral Sandpipers. There are many places to hide, however! Directions (Courtesy of Rob Dobos) The birds were on Fifth Rd. East about 100m North from Green Mountain Road, in the field on the west side of the road but were south of the wettest part of the field where you might expect them, and would hide in the furrows so were not always easy to see. They were more or less opposite the stop warning sign. Good Birding, Lev Frid _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
