The South Peel Naturalists' Club held their 47th Christmas Bird Count (Peel-Halton Counties - ONPH). Limited snow cover and occasional stiff breezes resulted in lower than normal numbers. However with 80 species seen today it was one of our best in terms of species diversity.

Notable birds included 3 Harlequin Ducks (male and 2 females) at the foot of Hurontario Street (east of the Credit River maybe a 1 km east of their previously reported location at the base of Mississauga Road

9 Yellow-rumped Warblers (8 in one tree) on both sides of the Credit River in Port Credit (between Mississauga Rd and Hurontario St.).

Locally uncommon Tundra Swans flew by at Arkendo Park in east Oakville (1 road west of Winston Churchill off Lakeshore Ave)

A soon to depart Wood Duck (male) at Lake Aquitaine in Meadowvale.

2 Tufted Titmice in Norway Spruce at the intersection of Brookfield Road and Brookfield Crescent (Brookfield Road is the first road to the right east of Dorval Drive on Lakeshore Road.

Maybe the best winter bird was a Ruby-crowned Kinglet in Sedgewick Park at the east end of Hixon Road. Bird was low to ground beside the last driveway on the south side of Hixon St. Hixon St is the first light south of Recbecca St on Third Line in Oakville.

Count week continues until the end of Tuesday - despite recording 80 species we still dipped on Belted Kingfisher, Eastern Bluebird (both should be in Bronte PP). Common Loon, American Coot, White-crowned and Fox Sparrow were also missed. Double-crested Cormorant for that matter.

Complete results will be published in the South Peel Naturalists' Club Newsletter and on Audubon CBC website http://cbc.audubon.org/cbccurrent/current_table.html
