Ontbirds:
On December 17th, while walking along an old CNR right-of-way I flush ed
12 Gray Partridges.
I apologize for the delay in reporting this, but our computer was not
operating correctly and I was not able to get on the internet until
now.
The location of the CNR right-of-way is in Brant County. The section where
I found the partridge is where it runs between Pleasant Ridge Rd.
= and Arthur Rd., west of Brantford. The area is almost directly south
of = the Brantford Airport.
Pleasant Ridge Rd. runs south from Colborne St. West. From 403 Highw ay
you would go south on Rest Acres Rd. (Highway 24) to the traffic
light= at Colborne St. W. Turn left on Colborne St. and drive past the
Brantfo= rd for about 2 km. and turn right on Pleasant Ridge Rd. The
CNR rail line= ROW crosses Pleasant Ridge Rd. about 2 1/2 km. south of
Colborne St. (Th= is is just before you reach Old Shellard Lane and
Shellard Lane.) On the = east side of the road the ROW has been made
into a walking trail, but on = the west side it has not and the ROW is
in an overgrown state. It is thi= s section where I discovered the
partridge. So you walk westerly from Pl= easant Ridge Rd. (actually in
a south-westerly direction). You can also = walk the ROW from its
access on Arthur Rd. This road runs off Rest Acres= Rd.
I discovered the partridge because I spotted their tracks in the litt le
bit of snow which covered the pathway. I flushed the birds after
clim= bing up the embankment adjacent to the trail and walking back
along the e= dge of the field planted with corn. They flew a few
hundred feet and lan= ded in the corn stubble.
