To add to the growing list of fall rarities a late report had a Glossy Ibis at the Narrow's Lock on the Rideau on Oct. 26th. The best bird from the KFN fall round-up last weekend was a Summer Tanager at Prince Edward Point. Other highlights at PEdPt from the round-up included a Harlequin Duck, Red-throated Loon, Red-necked Grebe, Barred Owl, (also on Amherst Island), Gray Catbird and Bohemian Waxwing. Short-eared Owls were reported on Wolfe Island for the first time this fall. Tundra Swans were tallied in the hundreds; South Bay and Smith Bay in Prince Edward County, Amherst Island, Wolfe Island, and Little Cataraqui Creek in the city.
Raptors noted this week were Bald Eagles at Perth Road Village and Bedford Mills and a Merlin at the Wilton Creek near Morven. North of the city there are a few lingering migrants; a Common Loon, 2 Red-winged Blackbirds, a Common Grackle, and a Fox Sparrow at Bedford Mills. At Elginburg, some signs of winter; a Purple Finch, a Pine Siskin, and a N. Shrike. Maybe it's the time that a lot of people start bird feeding in earnest but to get three reports of Tufted Titmice in one week is really unusual in the Kingston region. One was reported on the weekend of the round-up, another was at Wilstead just east of Gananoque on Tuesday and another was at Bath yesterday.
