Ontario, W. Quebec Compiler & transcriber: Chris Lewis [email protected] At 9:00 am, Thursday December 25, 2008 this is Chris Lewis reporting. The most interesting reports came from outside the Ottawa-Gatineau area. A Northern Hawk Owl found along Cameron Side Rd. west of Perth on the 18th was still present on the 23rd, and another was still near Vankleek Hill on the 16th. GREAT GRAY OWL sightings - one near L'Orignal on the 14th and one south of Lanark on the 17th and 18th - fit in with this season's spate of northern visitors. A VARIED THRUSH has been coming to a feeder near Lanark since the 17th. According to the information posted on ONTBIRDS, the homeowner requests that anyone wishing to see this bird please call first; the phone number is 613-278-2386. Closer to home, reports included Wild Turkeys in several locations including a group of 3 that continues to visit a feeder near the Hurdman bridge south of downtown Ottawa, a late Great Blue Heron along March Valley Rd. on the 18th, a Peregrine Falcon that has evidently been regular in the Billings Bridge area, and a couple of Glaucous Gulls among the Great Black-backed Gulls that seem to favour the Rideau River as a roosting site in recent winters. Snowy Owls were reported from various locations over the past week, as were small flocks of Bohemian Waxwings, Pine Grosbeaks and White-winged Crossbills, and Pine Siskins have been noted again over the past few days, after being nearly absent since mid-November. Merry Christmas and Good Birding to all! _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
