Highlights of reports received July 17 through July 24 from the
Niagara Frontier Region include FRANKLIN'S GULL and RED CROSSBILLS.
July 20 and 21 on Lake Erie at Dunkirk Harbor, a very rare
occurrence, an adult, breeding plumage FRANKLIN'S GULL on the Main
Street beach. Also in the harbor, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED
SANDPIPER, SANDERLING, SEMIPALM. SANDPIPER and LEAST SANDPIPER.
A real surprise this week - 12 RED CROSSBILLS, briefly stopping in a
yard in Orchard Park on July 22. The flock has not been re-found.
In Buffalo, at the UB Main Street Campus, an adult and an immature
PEREGRINE FALCON, frequently seen at the chimney along Winspear
Avenue. In downtown Buffalo, two more PEREGRINE FALCONS. And a white
hawk, most likely a rare plumage of RED-TAILED HAWK, for at the least
two years in the Niagara County Town of Cambria.
At Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo, a LEAST BITTERN, seen two days
this week from the mound at the end of the Warbler Walk Trail. Also at
Tifft Nature Preserve this week, a NORTHERN HARRIER, plus 8 GREEN
HERONS, 10 WARBLING VIREOS, CAROLINA WREN, 19 HOUSE WRENS, 8 MARSH
WRENS, 4 BL.-GR. GNATCATCHERS, 2 WOOD THRUSHES, 20 GRAY CATBIRDS,
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, BROWN THRASHER, 49 YELLOW WARBLERS, 11 COMMON
YELLOWTHROATS, SAVANNAH SPARROW, 25 SONG SPARROWS, 9 SWAMP SPARROWS
and a ROSE-BR. GROSBEAK.
In Chautauqua County, at the Canadaway Creek Wildlife Management
Area in the Town of Arkwright, warblers included 5 MOURNING WARBLERS,
plus MAGNOLIA WARBLER, BL.-THR. GREEN WARB., OVENBIRD, COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT and HOODED WARBLER. Also in the county, at Saint
Columbans in Sheridan, 7 sub-
adult BALD EAGLES.
From Amherst this week - in a Williamsville yard, TUFTED TITMOUSE,
RED-BR. NUTHATCH, CAROLINA WREN, 6 BALTIMORE ORIOLES and 6 PURPLE
FINCHES. And, over Main Street and Bailey Avenue, a GREAT EGRET.
