Highlights of reports received October 18 through October 25 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, EASTERN PALM
WARBLER and CATTLE EGRET.
October 21, the female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was still present in
Houghton, at house #9705 on Route 19 in the Allegany County Town of
Caneadea. The male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD at the same location was last
reported on the 19th. Observers watching for the hummingbirds also
reported 2 COMMON RAVENS and 25 PINE SISKINS flying over the site.
From Amherst State Park, October 24, a very rare EASTERN or YELLOW
PALM WARBLER with two of the region's expected WESTERN PALM WARBLERS.
The warblers were on the meadow side of Ellicott Creek, south of the
wooden bridge. In addition at the park - WINTER WREN, AMER. TREE
SPARROW, WHITE-THR. SPARROW, WHITE-CR. SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO and
RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
Also in Amherst, October 23, an ORANGE-CR. WARBLER in a Williamsville yard.
October 20, a CATTLE EGRET in the Lake Ontario Plains, in a pasture
at Waterport Road and Route 98, in the Town of Carlton. The egret
could not be found on the 21st.
Other reports this week - At Athol Springs, on Lake Erie in Hamburg,
an unexpected BRANT, plus FORSTER'S TERN and MERLIN. On Lake Ontario,
at Point Breeze in Carlton, a flight of RED-BR. MERGANSERS, COMMON
LOONS and small numbers of LONG-TAILED DUCKS and BONAPARTE'S GULLS.
PINE SISKINS at a couple locations along Lake Ontario. And, to the
east of the region, EVENING GROSBEAKS have been reported in Central
New York.
