Highlights of reports received September 20 through September 27 from the Niagara Frontier Region include JAEGERS, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, SANDHILL CRANE, CAROLINA WREN and fall migrants.

Two reports of JAEGERS this week at the Lake Erie shore in the Town of Hamburg. September 22, 3 JAEGERS, probably POMARINE JAEGERS, flew off the lake and into the distance over the Eatery Restaurant parking lot on Route 5 in Athol Springs. September 26, a PARASITIC JAEGER chasing RING- BILLED GULLS at Woodlawn Beach State Park. Also at Woodlawn, a PEREGRINE FALCON and a TURKEY VULTURE in the same tree, and 15 more TURKEY VULTURES on the beach.

An early LAPLAND LONGSPUR with 50 HORNED LARKS on September 21, in the Niagara County Town of Porter, in the field at Youngstown-Wilson and Porter Center Roads.

In the Oak Orchard Wildlife Management Area, September 23, 5 SANDHILL CRANES over Windmill Marsh. At Goose Pond, a VIRGINIA RAIL, and a total of six shorebird species in the Oak Orchard marshes included BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and SHORT- B. DOWITCHER. Over in the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area, MERLIN at the Lewiston Road overlook and at Spring Marsh, on Salt Road north of Route 77, a GREAT EGRET with a red leg band; from the Motor Island heronry in the Niagara River.

September 22, a surprise in East Aurora, a CAROLINA WREN feeding two recently fledged young. August 20 was the latest date for fledglings in the 1988 New York State Breeding Bird Atlas.

Even with clear skies and record high temperatures, strong fall migration reports this week. September 21 in a Williamsville yard, 10 warbler species with 5 YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKERS, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, YELLOW-B. FLYCATCHER, BLUE- HEADED VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, CEDAR WAXWING, SCARLET TANAGER, DARK-EYED JUNCO and ROSE-BR. GROSBEAK. On the 22nd at Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo, a one-day-late BALTIMORE ORIOLE, plus PEREGRINE FALCON, LINCOLN'S SPARROW and 14 warbler species including over 15 each of NASHVILLE WARBLER and MAGNOLIA WARBLER.

The night of September 26 over the Town of Tonawanda, a listener heard 20 VEERYS, 8 GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSHES and 55 SWAINSON'S THRUSHES.

September 23, 10 shorebird species on the Niagara Peninsula of Ontario. At the Hutchinson Road sod farms in Dunnville, 23 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 11 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, over 50 KILLDEER and 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, plus 20 HORNED LARKS and 10 AMERICAN PIPITS. At Rock Point Park, a PEREGRINE FALCON, 7 shorebird species and 4 warbler species.

And, in Niagara Falls, New York, 2 BALD EAGLES have apparently been regular sights at the driving range at the Hyde Park golf course.
