Odds 'n sods around York region this past week begin with the first VIRGINIA RAIL of the season. It was observed by Bruce Brydon on April 12th. He had the bird calling from the cattail marsh east of Bathurst, about 1 km north of Hochreiter Road. I caught up to this bird yesterday evening. It was doing its distinctive "Kiddick! Kiddick! Kiddick!" call in the same place. Less than 2 kms southwest of this location I happened upon first WILSON'S SNIPE of the spring - two of them, in fact. They flushed from the wet grasses on the south side of Hochreiter Road, across from the old silver/grey building that sits 2/3 of the way down that muddy laneway. There was also a resident NORTHERN HARRIER casting long shadows eastward against the tree trunks in the swamp. Riding my mountain bike up the Holland River Trail late yesterday afternoon I observed three PIED-BILLED GREBES swimming together just north of the pedestrian bridge where the old locks are (about 1 km south of Green Lane). Farther north and west I had a PILEATED WOODPECKER and a WINTER WREN along the riverside trails south of Holland Landing. Yesterday, a birder in Keswick observed 5 SANDHILL CRANES flying west over the Holland River to land in the cattails across from Ravenshoe Road's western end. This would be just north of Bradford in the same area where Peter Wukasch had them last year on April 15th. East of Keswick and Bradford, the first PURPLE MARTINS of the year were observed by birder Tom Mills near Sutton this morning. On Tuesday, Chris Dunn and Julia Marko had 8 TREE SWALLOWS, a late NORTHERN SHRIKE, a handful of FOX SPARROWS, and the first FIELD SPARROW of the season in south Newmarket (Ecopark area south of Mulock). Bruce Brydon and his wife observed an OSPREY carrying nesting material on Bloomington Road near Hwy. 404. Now that April has finally holstered her guns, birds are going to find it safe to resume migrating. This weekend's spectacular spring weather should be excellent for birding. York Region residents who observe any interesting birds are encouraged to share their information. Species due to arrive any day include: Savannah, Swamp, White-throated, and White-crowned Sparrow; Greater Yellowlegs; Broad-winged Hawk; Eastern Bluebird; Ruby-crowned Kinglet; Pine and Yellow-rumped Warbler; American Bittern; Eastern Towhee; and - of course - many others. Ron Fleming, Newmarket York Region is halfway between Barrie and Toronto, on the south side of Lake Simcoe. Fred Jazvac and I saw the Hairy Woodpecker with bright yellow head patches today in the same location, near the disused railway bridge over Park Head Creek, about 4:00 p.m. this afternoon. Revised Directions: Mapart Ontario Road Atlas 2007, page 38. For easier access to this location, take County Road 10 from the stoplights in Hepworth, 4.0 km south to Park Head Road. Turn west on Park Head Road, then .7 km to fire number/rural house number 80 on the north side. There's lots of parking on the rail line here, while the shoulder is narrow, and the road paralleling the rail line is private. You can see the bridge from here, about 100 m north of Park Head Road. It took about an hour of viewing the feeders in the back of 23 Manitou before it showed up with a small flock of cowbirds, grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds. Although it only stayed under the feeder for about a minute it showed well its spectacular yellow-head in the sunlight and the white patch on the wings was quite visible when it flew off. It is probaly best to view it from the driveway at 26 Larose, the street one over from Manitou as the owners of that house don't mind people using their driveway. Peter Hall Directions from Ottawa: Exit Highway 417 at Exit 79. Proceed about a km south until you reach Road 500 West. Turn left into Forest Park and take the fourth street on the right (Manitou).
