THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 6:30 pm, SUNDAY FEBRUARY 25, 2007
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
Interesting local bird reports this week came from both the Quebec and
Ontario sides.
From Quebec: On the 18th, 13 Bald Eagles - 4 adults and 9 immature birds of
various ages - were seen flying over and into the Gatineau hills from the
Eardley-Masham Rd. On the same day, a visit to the Lac Lablanche area north
of Mayo was very productive for winter finches, with good numbers of Purple
Finch, Red Crossbill, White-winged Crossbill and Pine Siskin coming to
the road, often in mixed flocks. An unusual backyard visitor, a
Red-shouldered Hawk, has evidently been coming to a backyard at #46 Prom.
Lakeview in Aylmer for at least the past 3 weeks - it was seen most recently
on the afternoon of the 25th. A Peregrine Falcon was feeding on a Mallard
below the Deschenes rapids back on the 17th, and on the evening of the
same day, 2 Short-eared Owls were observed along Ch. de la Riviere south of
Breckenridge. A Winter Wren, probably the latest winter record for the
Ottawa-Gatineau area, was seen at the footbridge along the recreational
path west of the south end of Vanier St. on the 25th and a few American Robins
and Cedar Waxwings were in this area as well.
From the Ontario side: On the 24th, the male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen
again on the Ottawa River north of the Lemieux Island water filtration
plant. On the 17th, 5 GRAY PARTRIDGE were found along
Concession 17 northeast of Casselman near house #2653, a Snowy Owl was at
Concession 19 near Ste-Rose Rd. on the 19th, and several Lapland Longspurs
continue to be reported east of Ottawa with mixed flocks of Horned Larks and
Snow Buntings. Two adult Glaucous Gulls were resting on the ice on the
Rideau River south of the Tennis Club with approx. 15 Herring and 150 Great
Black-backed Gulls on the 25th. A Merlin reported from the Britannia
Conservation Area on the 19th and 22nd is likely the same bird that has been
seen occasionally in this neighbourhood all winter. A Carolina Wren
continues to be an irregular visitor at a feeder on Burland St. by Britannia
Bay as of the 18th, and 3 American Robins were feeding on Common Buckthorn
berries with a group of Cedar Waxwings near the Britannia filtration plant
on the 19th. Ventures to the Larose forest this week produced a male
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER along Clarence-Cambridge Rd. approx. 100 m.
west of Gagnon Rd. on the 20th, 3 Brown-headed Cowbirds at a feeder at the
east end of this road on the 20th and 25th, small numbers of Purple Finch &
White-winged Crossbill and several Pine Siskin along Clarence-Cambridge Rd.,
and at least 20 Evening Grosbeaks at a feeder on St. Felix Rd. on the
north side of
the forest on the 25th.
Thank you - Good Birding!
