Birders,
I spent some time at Sarnia today and located two Red-necked Grebes. One
was at the Point Edward lakewatch spot at noon. Later in the afternoon it
was closer to the bridge.
Another Red-necked Grebe was at the entrance to Sarnia Harbour. (Sarnia
harbour is near the end of Exmouth Street at the grain elevators. Look out
near the ship "Algorail").
All the usual wintering ducks were around plus a male Pintail was near the
harbour. It has been around for a little while. A White-winged Scoter was
off Point Edward as well.
Not many gulls around this winter. I saw only one Glaucous today at the
harbour among a few Herring, Ring-billed and Great Black-backed.
The St. Clair River has had thousands of ducks the last few weeks, but
nothing unusual this winter to my knowlege. Two coots and a Gadwall duck
(normal wintering) have been around Lambton Generating Station most of the
winter. There was a male wigeon there, but I have not seen it lately.
Directions to Point Edward Lakewatch: Find Front St. in Sarnia (along
river in downtown) and follow it north to St. Clair St. just past the 402
overpass. Turn left on St. Clair St. and follow it to its very north end in
Point Edward past Michigan Ave. Turn left on Victoria Ave. and go less than
two blocks to Fort St. Turn right onto Fort St. and go to the parking lot
at the lake.
