The Pakenham-Arnprior CBC was held December 26 under unseasonably warm
(-1 to +1 deg C) conditions. Despite a shortage of participants, a respectable
53 species was tallied, with four new species being added to the count (now
totalling 114 species).

Highlights were the four new species, all waterfowl (not surprising due to all
moving water being fully open for the first time):
1 male Northern Pintail
1 male Greater Scaup
1 female Lesser Saup
1 basic male Ruddy Duck

The open water and lack of snow cover coupled with a high vole population
resulted in a number of record high counts: American Black Duck (11), Mallard
(149), Common Goldeneye (86), Herring Gull (80), Great Black-backed Gull (6),
Red-breasted Merganser (2 - 4th count), Northern Harrier (9 - 5th count), and
Bald Eagle (6) .

Also noteworthy was a Northern Saw-whet Owl (5th record). Finches, apart from
American Goldfinches, were scarce. For the first time in recent history, no
crossbills or Evening Grosbeaks were recorded, and only 11 Pine Siskins and 2
Common Redpolls were tallied.

On the 20th we went to the Lindsay/Ops Waste Management Facility on Wilson
Rd off Highway 36 just north east of Lindsay. In a flock of 30 Herring
Gulls there were 2 Great black-backed Gulls (an immature and a 2nd winter
bird) and 2 Glaucous gulls (2nd and 3rd winter birds).

A Great-blue heron was flushed from the frozen ditch on Cheesefactory Rd a
half km west of Settler's Rd. It flew over the frozen marsh to the north.
Cheesefactor Rd begins off hughway 36 one conscession east of the Waste
Management Facility.

On the 21st we stopped in Omemee to check the open water below the dam.
There were 3 Canada Geese, 2 male and a female Hooded Mergansers and a
female Mallard. Omeemee is between Lindsay and Peterboro on highway #7.
