Happy New Year, fellow birders! This afternoon, at 4:00 p.m., my son André and I saw a Harlequin Duck actively swimming and diving on the Ottawa River, with approximately 80 Common Goldeneyes. We searched for a Barrows' Goldeneye, sometimes seen there, but haven't seen one.

Directions: From Ottawa: take the Queensway West toward Pembroke. Take the first exit to Pembroke on your right, and follow this Road #40 until you see a sign for the Province of Québec. Turn right at that turnoff on the 148, drive over a big bridge over the Ottawa River to Morrison Island, and keep driving toward the next bridge. The Harlequin was sighted in the bay on your right just before the second bridge (leading to Allumettes Island). Spotting scope your best bet, these Anatids are skittish.

From the west or Hwy 41: drive toward Pembroke downtown to Pembroke Street,
and drive eastbound until you exit the city, and see a sign to turn left to the Province of Quebec. Turn left on the 148, and follow directions above when on Morrison Island
