Today, Jan. 1 2007, we saw 8 Bald Eagles from the docks of the Royal Resort
located near Highway 35 and the Third Concession of Somerville ( Baddow Road)
and 8 Bald Eagles on and near a small Island just south of the private bridge
near the end of Juniper Isle Road a few kilometres north of the Royal Resort.
Some of these birds would be double counted as the Juniper Isle site can be
seen from the resort so we had perhaps a dozen birds, approx 4 adult plumage, 4
in transition and 4 sub adult. No Eagles were seen from the south end of Indian
Point. Common Mergansers were numerous throughout this area. To get to Indian
Point road, turn west off Highway 35 on to Grandy Road in downtown Coboconk.

Coboconk is located on Highway 35, a 40 minute drive north of Lindsay.

10 intrepid birders enjoyed the 8 degree temperatures and drove the
environs of Peterborough and Apsley today. Despite only recording 34
species, some good finds were made : Raptors included 2 Coopers'
hawks, an adult Bald Eagle, a dark-phased Rough-legged Hawk, and 3
   Red-tails.
The group also saw 3 Northern Ravens, a Northern Shrike, 5
Purple Finch (#6 s. of Petroglyphs), a Red Crossbill and 12 Pine
Siskins (Jack Lake Rd., Apsley). Also on #6, a flock of about 40 Cedar
Waxwings included 5 Bohemians. All were feeding on Juniper berries.
A Kingfisher was seen on the Otonabee River near Trent
   University.
Many thanks to Jerry Ball for co-leading this outing.

A single Cackling goose was present in a flock of about 100 Canada geese
grazing on the lawns on the Lake Erie side of the Peace Bridge at 1430
hours, January 1.

Exit the QEW at Fort Erie, and when you reach the road along the lake
shore turn left toward the Peace Bridge. The geese were on the left
hand side of the road before you reach the Peace Bridge. If the birds
are not there they may be grazing at other points along the shore. Try
driving along the lake shore away from the Peace Bridge toward the Fort.

While traveling between Ottawa and Montreal today, January 1st, 2007,
stopped over at Concession 20 and Ste-Rose. Was very surprised to see a
Great Blue Heron standing in a snow covered field next to trench/drainage
ditch along Concession 20 (east of Ste-Rose just after house # 2997). It
walked slowly down the bank and into the ditch. After awhile it flew across
the road into another trench/drainage ditch that goes around a farm field.
It stabbed at something in the water but I did not see if it caught
anything. It was still there when I left. The mild weather of late had
melted a lot of the ice in the ditch.

DIRECTIONS:
>From Ottawa, take Hwy 417 and go past Casselman. Take the next exit which
is # 58 and turn left on
Cty Road 8 until you come to Concession 20. Turn right on Concession 20 and
continue past Ste-Rose.
Go past house # 2997. There is a very long and deep drainage ditch on the
left side of Concesssion 20
and also a much longer one that goes around a farm field on the other side
of the road.
