The 5 Cackling Geese first found in Cobourg harbour on December 14th and tallied on the CBC on the 16th have taken to grazing with the Canadas on the lawns of the Cobourg yacht club. They keep together in a little group among the bigger geese, seemingly unfazed by passers-by, allowing excellent close views and comparison. They were there most of the morning yesterday and today, and were still feeding on the lawns along the north edge of the parking lot at 2pm today, December 19th.
Directions: Exit Hwy.401 at Division Street, Exit 474, and go south on Division to the harbour. Turn west and go round the north edge of the harbour to the main parking lot on the west side. Check the lawns and the harbour itself - morning does seem to be the best time. Follow the trail heading west and as soon as you come to a split in the trail, stay to the left and it was seen within the first 20 metres. The bird is a brightly coloured male and looks very out of place for December 19th. Along the north shore of Wolfe Island this morning by the quarry on the north side of the road by the swamp near the gate on the hill there was 1 WINTER WREN, 1 COMMON GRACKLE, 1 BELTED KINGFISHER, 2 GREAT HORNED OWLS and 1 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET. At this same location on the south side of the road among the rose hips just beyond the gate to the quarry was 1 NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD. Other good sightings on Wolfe Island for winter listing include 1 GREAT BLUE HERON at Button Bay, another RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET at the south end of the 12th Line, several GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, 2 NORTHERN SHRIKES, 8 BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS at the south end of the 7th Line and 7 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS along the 5th Line. There are still lots of TUNDRA SWANS and other waterfowl about. In Milton subdivision there was 1 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER by the T-junction and the EURASIAN WIGEON is back in Elevator Bay by Dupont. Cooler temperatures brought snow squalls to Ottawa and moments of challenging visibility but our hopeful foursome did enjoy a rare day of excellent winter birding. The highlight was the discovery around 1pm of approximately 12,000 Snow Geese that appeared to be two flocks, very close together with only 3 or 4 blue morphs, suggesting that they are from the Greater Snow Goose population. The birds were in a cornfield on the northeast corner of Ste.Catherine Road and Concession Road 20, north of highway 417 near St. Isadore. We witnessed a spectacular display when periodically large numbers of birds took to the air, then settled back down into the field. Later, heading west on County Road 8 we encountered a third mixed flock of approximately 2500 Snow Geese and 300 Canada Geese across from the property at civic #1685 north of the Truck Inspection Station on hwy 417. Birds appeared to continue to arrive as we were observing. We also located a female Snowy Owl perched on the Chimo Hotel billboard sign near St. Isadore which we viewed from the Agro Culture parking lot. Another good bird for the day, and the second life bird for two birders, was a male Barrow's Goldeneye found swimming and feeding among Common Goldeneye and one Common Merganser on the Rideau River near the Rideau Tennis Club. A total of 26 species were listed and we all headed home very happy.
