I wish to thank the very many who helped with the observing and counting during
the 2006 Cranberry Marsh Raptor Watch in southwest Whitby. After over 350 hours
during 102 days I shall be closing down the official counting on Thursday,
Nov.30.

The site locale, the camaraderie, the dedication to learning the jizz of hawks
in flight, the non-raptors kept us busy. Although we did not have the likes of
a Cave Swallow, Dickcissel, Golden-crowned Sparrow or Gyrfalcon there were
plenty of "good" birds to challenge us. The very nearness of a Yellow-billed
Cuckoo, as well as a juvenile Cooper's Hawk prior to its pouncing on a
Red-winged Blackbird, along with many other sightings, kept us happy.

With 2 days to go CMRW has "recovered" from 2 low-in-numbers years, with over
8200 migrating raptors-- including a record number of each of BALD EAGLE (57)
and OSPREY (158). To date the Rough-legged count has been only 30, and the
total for the Broad-winged was below 1000 for the 5th consecutive year.

It has been an educational experience for several very keen families.

Again I thank those who participated.

Hi; This years Migration was a very good year,in fact a record year for our
site!We increased our count by over 100% over previous years. At this time I
would like to thank Dennis Barry,Margaret Carney,Betsy Smith &Martin Bence
when on a whim they decided to check out our site Sept.20/06 only to be
rewarded with over 8,500 Broad-Wings passing over the site.I only wish I
could have been there with them!I would also like to thank the rare visitors
we did have join us.Our total Raptor Migration for 2006 came to
12,326.Average birds per hr. with BW included = 102, without the BW tally
just over 23 birds per hr. with 122 hrs. of observation still a very good
year. Red Tails up T.Vultures up & Golden Eagles up.
On behalf of myself,Martin Bence & Graham Nord have a great holiday season &
good birding in 2007!
Cheers;
Mike Williamson
