Betsy and I met up with Kevin McLaughlin today for some lake watching in
Grimsby and Stoney Creek. The highlight birds were both at the end of Grays
Road (take the QEW exit at Fruitland Road to the east or Centennial Parkway
to the west and take the QEW North Service Road to Drakes Road to Grays Road
and proceed north to Lake Ontario). There was a large raft of mostly
goldeneyes and scoters with Long-tailed Ducks and scaup mixed in. They were
also visible from Sayer's Park just a little east of Grays Road. Watch for
the No Parking signs and park where they are not.

Anyway, we had an adult male Barrow's Goldeneye and an apparent adult male
hybrid Barrow's X Common Goldeneye in this raft at the foot of Grays Road.
Intermediate traits noticed on the hybrid were the rather crescent-shaped
white head spot - rounded on the bottom and pointed on the top, more black
on the back than on a Common forming larger white elongated spots than on a
Barrow's, and a suggestion of the Barrow's black spur at the shoulder. Also
in this raft was an immature male Goldeneye with a bright orange bill and
small white head spots coming in which I only had a brief study of.

At the foot of Fifty Road (there is an exit from the QEW) we had an adult
Iceland Gull.

Good birding!
Willie

Subject: [Ontbirds]Three-toed Woodpecker @ Presqu'ile.

At noon today, after searching unsuccessfully for the Black-backed
Woodpecker that Don Shanahan had found on Friday and that had been
re-discovered this morning by Maureen Riggs and Marg Fleming, I found a
female Three-toed Woodpecker in the same general area, and Don was able
to photograph it soon after that.

Directions by way of a repeat of Don's original posting:

> While strolling along the Fingers Trail at Presqu'ile this afternoon,
> I found a female Black-backed Woodpecker. This trail is not signed but
> starts at a wooden gate approximately .9km along the main road from
> the park's admission booth. The gate, on the east side, leads to a
> trail through the panne and then into the mixed forest. About 80m
> along into the forest, a sawed-off log to the right has a piece of
> flagging tape on it. To the right of this is an open grove containing
> the dead trees the woodpecker foraged on.
> Presqu'ile Provincial Park is located south of Brighton (HW 401 exit
> 509). As there are no ducks nearby, the Fingers Trail is open every day.

The Three-toed (it actually had six) was not quite as far into the woods
as mentioned above. Stop when you have to duck under some cedar boughs
and look at a dense fallen spruce on the left side of the trail.
