Hi Ontbirders,
Yesterday, November 2, I birded Amherst Island. Overall, it was
interesting day with a good number of raptors. After a lot of searching, the
"Owl Woods" netted 1 Northern Saw-whet Owl in the White Cedars near the main
White Cedar grove along the trail. In the Jack Pine plantation 20+
Long-eared Owls were observed with 7 in one tree. Also present was 1 Hermit
Thrush and 1 Fox Sparrow. At the entrance to the woods we watched an imm.
Northern Shrike eating a Meadow Vole.
At the East end of the island ( KFN property) 11 Tundra swans were
noted. Other raptors included 11 Northern Harrier, 7 Red-tailed Hawk, 4
Rough-legged Hawk and 2 American Kestrel.
