THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 5:00pm, THURSDAY APRIL 20, 2006

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Another fine week for spring birding in the Ottawa-Gatineau area.
A ROSS'S GOOSE was present all day until at least 7:00 pm on April
18th, among a large flock of Canada Geese on the Peterson Sod Farm
at Snake Island Rd. and Manotick Stn. Rd. south of Ottawa. Closer
to town, a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was again seen at the large
pond on the east side of Moodie Dr. south of Trail Rd. on the
17th. On the Quebec side, a GREAT EGRET was present in the
Sabourin marsh behind the "Sportheque" arena at Rue Jean-Proulx in
Gatineau from the 15th until at least the 17th, and east of
Gatineau a male Eurasian Wigeon was still at the Marais des
Laiches Ouest sector of the marshes along the Ottawa River as of
at least the 17th. Other water bird of note were Common Loon,
Red-necked Grebe and a male Redhead, all seen from the Shirley's
Bay boat lunch on the 17th and 18th. Two Snow Geese including one
blue-morph bird were at the Moodie Dr. pond on both days, along
with 5 Redhead, 3 Ruddy Ducks and an adult Lesser Black-backed
Gull. East of Ottawa on the 18th, a male Red-breasted Merganser
was present in the Lafarge quarry along Giroux Rd.

Two Red-shouldered Hawks were seen in the area of Fitzroy
Provincial Park on the 18th and another Broad-winged Hawk was
migrating over Britannia the same day. A SANDHILL CRANE flew
north over Thomas Dolan Parkway at Constance Creek on the 17th.
On the 18th 2 Barred Owls were heard calling in the forested area
along Conley Rd. in the Munster area, and 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS
were seen in the old burn area off Whistler Rd. in Constance Bay.

Songbird activity continues to increase as well, with additional
reports of Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Hermit Thrushes and both Pine
and Yellow-rumped Warblers moving through. New species this week
included a Brown Thrasher at Lois Ave. by Shirley's Bay on the
18th, and 10 spp. of sparrows have been noted in various
locations, including Chipping, Field, Vesper, Savannah, Fox, Swamp
and White-throated Sparrows. Finally, in the finch department, a
male Purple Finch was seen in Cumberland on the 19th, and a flock
of at least 20 Evening Grosbeaks was seen along the Kerwin Rd.
trail west of Kanata on the 18th.

Thank you - Good Birding!
