Yesterday I saw 2 Northern Mockingbirds and today 1 in the same unusual
location - the parking lot of the Toronto Congress Centre. They have chosen a
small grassy area with shrubby trees in the SW corner of the parking lot,
directly under hydro transmission lines. They do not seem bothered by the
constant take offs and landings overhead from Pearson International. Both
sightings were around 12:30 p.m. The Toronto Congress Centre is located at 650
Dixon Rd., just off Highway 401. There are entrances off of Dixon or
Martingrove.

Got my permit and found that the Nonquon lagoons have lots of shorebird habitat
at present, but not too many shorebirds yet - most were in the second lagoon,
with totals today:
Killdeer 7
Greater Yellowlegs 33
Lesser Yellowlegs 23
Pectoral Sandpiper 1
Dunlin 1
Wilson's Snipe 1

2 Ospreys were on their reconstructed nest atop the bank of baseball diamond
lights just south of the lagoons - this nest failed last year.
There were good numbers of most common waterfowl, with highish counts of 126
Green-winged Teal and 192 Bufflehead.
2 tagged Trumpeter Swans.
Hundreds of Tree Swallows kept low out of the strong east winds, with smaller
numbers of Barn and N. Rough-winged.
2 Pied-billed Grebes.
Surprisingly, no Boneys or Caspian Terns.
Several flickers, 2 noisy Pileated Woodpeckers.
Singing Winter Wrens, Eastern Phoebe, Brown Thrasher, and Song, Savannah, and
White-throated sparrows - and the peacocks across the road north of the lagoons!

Copying Geoff Carpentier's directions:
Permits may be purchased at the Durham Region Transfer Site at 1623 Reach Rd,
Port Perry during the following business hours .... Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday
and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 6 p.m.
To get to the transfer station, travel north on Hwy 12 past Port Perry [Hwy 7A]
to the next traffic lights [Regional Road 8 = Reach Rd.] and travel east to
#1623 on the north side of the road.

The lagoons are located one road north of the transfer site east off Hwy 12 on
Concession Rd. 8 [don't get confused as, despite the fact that these roads are
both numbered "8", they are two different roads - one is a regional paved road,
the other a dirt concession road.]

Please do not enter these lagoons without a valid permit. Last year's permit is
not useable this year and every person must have their own.
