On Saturday morning, April8, a number of us were entertained by a Great Egret, stalking the shallows, with periodic short fly-abouts, in the marshland to the south of the old beaver dam, east of Thickson's Woods in southeast Whitby. 3 Green-winged Teals were there as well. 2 Eastern Phoebes busied themselves alongside the Corbett Creek valley, viewed from the meadow path. At the south end of the woods, at 9am, I was literally "surrounded" by 5 woodpecker species-- 1 Pileated, 4 Downy, 3 Hairy , 2 N.Flickers and 2+ Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers.
Of interest is the building activity by beavers to the west of Thickson Rd., to the immediate north of Wentworth Dr. Indeed, there is a very visible pond between 2 dams, and, very near the northerly dam is a large tree that is liable to fall very soon--it has been well-gnawed. Exit the 401 at Thickson Rd. (in east Whitby), south through Wentworth to the first street on your east -park alongside the north edge of the pine woods. They were so concentrated on noting the all-white tail and diagnostic underwing features that there was no opportunity to photograph the bird as he flew over them. In total, 155 raptors were counted--turkey vulture (72), osprey (2), northern harrier (1), sharp-shinned hawk (14), cooper's hawk (2), red-shouldered hawk (1), red-tailed hawk (58), rough-legged hawk (4--3 of which were light phase), and unidentified raptor (1). The highlight bird of the day was a beautiful dark morph red-tailed--very striking with almost black underparts and a bright red tail! Other birds noted at the Hawkwatch included rufous-sided towhee, song sparrow, fox sparrows (5), great blue heron, belted kingfisher, and common loon. Thanks to Colin and Tom for their help and good humour in recording today's flight. It circled for several minutes before landing in cattails in the middle of the marsh, straight out from the south viewing platform. The bird could not be seen once it landed. Directions: from the 401 in Oshawa take the Wilson Rd exit to Farewell St. Go south on Farewell to Colonel Sam Drive and turn right. Follow Colonel Sam to the General Motors Corporate office and turn right into the parking lot. At the Northwest corner of the parking lot is a trail. Follow the trail to the right to the viewing platform.
