THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 8:00 pm, SUNDAY FEBRUARY 19TH, 2006.

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

A week of weird weather (just like the rest of Ontario) produced
few bird reports, but several species of interest were noted.

The most interesting trend seems to be a small incursion of GREAT
GRAY OWLS. At least 6 birds have now been seen in the Ottawa-
Gatineau area since January 22nd, with the most recent sightings
reported from March Valley Rd. east of Klondike Rd. in Kanata on
the evening of the 18th, Giroux Rd. near the woodlot east of Frank
Kenny Rd. on the 17th, Rte. 300 at Gagnon Park east of Limoges on
the 13th, and Trim Rd. north of Innes Rd. in Orleans on the 12th.

A true sign of impending spring was the arrival of massive flocks
of 100's of Horned Larks with Snow Buntings and at least 1 Lapland
Longspur, in the Carp area at manure spreads along March Rd.
between Carp Rd. and Thomas Argue Rd. as well as Diamondview Rd.
at Donald B. Munro Rd.

Otherwise, the most recent reports of the YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD
and the BOREAL CHICKADEE in Forest Park east of Embrun came from
the 13th but they are likely still present, 2 Iceland Gulls were
seen with Glaucous and Great Black-backed Gulls on the Rideau
River behind Carleton Lodge along Hwy 16 on the 17th, a male
American Kestrel was seen at the Central Experimental Farm south
of the Fletcher Wildlife Garden on the 14th, a single American
Robin was reported from Kanata on the 13th and approx. 120
Bohemian Waxwings were seen along the Rockcliffe Parkway near the
airport on the 14th.

Thank you - Good Birding!
