Shorebirds have been reported in increasing numbers, including our resident breeders, but most noteworthy were several migrant species in the following locations: At Shirley's Bay on the 11th there were 1 Greater and 12 Lesser Yellowlegs and 3 Semipalmated Sandpipers. On the 8th there was a Short-billed Dowitcher in breeding plumage at this location. At the Alfred sewage lagoons on the 10th there were 1 Semipalmated Plover, 2 Greater and at least 90 Lesser Yellowlegs, in excess of 200 Least Sandpipers, a Stilt Sandpiper in breeding plumage, 1 Short-billed Dowitcher, and back on the 6th at Alfred there was 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper and 3 Short-billed Dowitchers. On the 10th in the Embrun area there were 1 Greater and several Lesser Yellowlegs, a few Solitary Sandpipers and Least Sandpipers and 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper. At the east end of Andrew Haydon Park (aka "Ottawa Beach") there was 1 Semipalmated Plover. In other interesting bird reports.....A Black-crowned Night-Heron and a Least Bittern were seen in the early morning of July 6th at the Marais aux Grenouillettes west of Masson, Quebec, and two Black-crowned Night-Herons were at a pond west of City Centre Park in Gloucester on the 8th. Several Black Terns were noted flying over the Ottawa River east of Petrie Island on the 4th of July. The breeding pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers in Constance Bay was observed with at least one fledged young on the 8th. A BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was reported from the Constance Creek wetland approx. 200 metres west of the bridge along Vances Side Rd. toward Baskins Bay on the 3rd - the habitat was described as rather wet, with some wading and bush-whacking involved to get to the location. Also found in this wetland area were Least Bittern, Green Heron, and both Willow and Alder Flycatcher. A Palm Warbler and a family of Lincoln's Sparrows were both reported as still being present along the Mer Bleue boardwalk as of the 8th. On a rather tragic note, the female of Ottawa's breeding pair of Peregrine Falcons was found injured on the roof of a downtown building on July 6th. She was transferred to Guelph for treatment and possible rehabilitation, but her severe injuries will evidently prevent her from flying again. The male of the pair is still reported to be looking after their single young.
