I was told by a reliable birder today that he has been hearing clay-colored sparrows singing in the Calf Pasture area of the park. I went over there, and listened for a time, but heard none. This is the area where they have been located in the past.
However, the trip was not a waste as there were three newly-arrived migrant monarch butterflies feeding on blue devil - having probably just crossed Lake Ontario. All were easily hand-captured, examined and re-released. I'd appreciate hearing about any "first-sightings" of monarchs. Others have now reached Winnipeg, Manitoba and Weyeth, Saskatchewan.
