My wife and I went to see the Dickcissel at Bronte P.P. today at 10.00 A.M. We found the male in his usual spot on one of the big bare trees close to Dundas Street. However, as nobody has reported it today, we also saw what I believe to be a female associating with the male. This bird had no black under the chin, was not singing and was generally alot more unobtrusive than the male. We did not go further down the trail via the hydro poles to try to find the possible other male reported from this area.
Directions: West on Dundas Street ( in Oakville area) until you see a chain across a trail on the south side of the road just passed (west of) Tremaine Rd. close to a big Local Attractions highway sign. Park at the side of the road and take this trail south, then east and then south when you will see two big, bare trees just off to the right. The Male uses these trees alot to sing from. We first saw the female (?) in a big bush straight in front of the trail before it veers east again towards the hydro poles. Regards Brendan O'Sullivan Mississauga. Dean Ware located the bird on the extreme east side of the western-most cell. Follow the path east from the parking lot, past the education centre and washrooms, over the wooden boardwalk and straight out to the small clearing. Look east. Also, a pair of Sandhill Cranes were observed landing in the marsh around 8:15 p.m. The shorebird impoundment was pumped dry today. Directions to Hillman Marsh from either Leamington or Wheatley. Take County Road 37 South from the Talbot Trail (old Hwy #3) for about 5 km. until you see the Hillman Marsh sign. Many thanks to Dean Ware for his EXCELLENT spotting and also to Marianne Reid for fielding our phone calls!!!!!! Safe birding, Faye and Lance Allin and Larry Cornelis
