This afternoon I found 10 species of shorebirds at the Alfred Sewage Lagoons
including a a female Hudsonian Godwit in breeding plumage, 3 Greater
Yellowlegs, 20 Semi-palmated Plover, 1 Black-bellied Plover, 60
Semi-palmated Sandpiper and 1 Wilson's Phalarope. There were the usual 11
species of waterfowl and several American Coot.
I know the waterfowl will stick around but it would be nice if the
shorebirds stayed for this Saturday's free Wetland Bird Identification
Workshop (for beginners) and the official launch of the Alfred Birding Trail
to be held at Alfred College and the lagoons.
DIRECTIONS: From the town of Alfred go southeast on Highway 17, then turn
south on Peat Moss Road and drive for 2 km. The lagoons are on your left
(east side of road). Contact Richard Villeneuve, Township of Alfred and
Plantagenet, at (613) 679-2292 for the required permit to enter the lagoons.
