OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - APR 08 dd 2005 AT 7:30 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Spring is rapidly advancing in the Ottawa area. New arrivals
since April 4th included Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Northern
Flicker, as well as many songbirds such as Golden-crowned Kinglet,
Winter Wren, Hermit Thrush and Vesper Sparrow, all reported from a
wide variety of locations. Increased numbers of Eastern Phoebes,
Tree Swallows, Eastern Bluebirds, Fox Sparrows and Dark-eyed
Juncos have also been reported from all over the region.

Waterfowl highlights were single Greater White-fronted Geese on
April 6th south of Pendleton where the road is flooded out, and on
the morning the 8th at Twin Elm Rd. at the Jock River with a small
number of Canada Geese. A record early Brant was viewed northeast
of Carlsbad Springs on the west side of Milton Rd. north of
Perrault Rd. on Apr. 7th, among scattered numbers of Canada Geese
and numerous puddle ducks. An uncounted but evidently large
number of Snow Geese were in the fields between Winchester and
Morewood south of Ottawa on the 4th, and in excess of 7500 Greater
Snow's were in the Riceville area on the 6th, along County Rd. #9
near the bridge over the South Nation River. A female Ruddy Duck
was in the flooded fields along Frank Kenney Rd. on the 7th, and a
male Redhead was with 4 Lesser Scaup on the Ottawa River near
Petrie Island on the 5th.

An Osprey was at the Embrun sewage lagoons on the 4th, and the
dark morph Red-tailed Hawk was still at the Gatineau airport as of
the 6th. Ten Wild Turkeys were displaying in a backyard in
L'Orignal east of Ottawa on the 7th. Back to Milton Rd. - on the
4th there were 4 SANDHILL CRANES in the cornfields on the west
side north of Perrault, and one was seen here on the 7th. Seven
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were reported from the fields in area of
the Trail Rd. Landfill on the 8th.

The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Rothwell Heights is still alive and
singing on Coxford St. as of the 5th. A single Great Gray Owl was
on Rifle Rd. near Shirley's Bay on the 6th, and finally, in the
Clyde Ave. woods today the 8th, there was NOT a Great Gray Owl but
a grey Great Horned Owl (ssp. subarcticus) returning north.

Thank you - Good Spring Birding!
