OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - MAR 06 2005 AT 5:00 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Both the TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE and the Carolina Wren continue to
reside in Rothwell Heights. The Solitaire has no fixed address and
no regular appearances, but has most recently been seen and heard
singing along Coxford St. between Wick Cr. and Wren Rd. on March
4th. The Wren has apparently been regular at a peanut feeder
around 7:00 AM in the backyard at #104 Rothwell Dr. This feeder is
not visible from the road, but the bird has also been seen in the
front yard and trees along the street at various times of day.
Please do not enter private property.

Otherwise, a very cold week produced only a very few signs of
spring (whenever that's going to happen?!) Two Peregrine Falcons,
likely the recently resident breeding pair, were seen on the
southeast corner of the Crowne Plaza hotel in downtown Ottawa on
the 4th. A Merlin was on a telephone pole on Baseline Rd. between
Merivale Rd. and Woodroffe Ave. on the morning of the 6th. Ring-
billed Gulls (yes, a sign of spring in Ottawa) were noted at Remic
rapids on the Ottawa River and in nearby parking lots on the 5th
and 6th.

A Snowy Owl was reported from the intersection of Woodroffe and
Fallowfield Rds. on the 2nd, and at least 7 GREAT GRAY OWLS were
still being seen along March Valley Rd. as of the 5th. Single
Great Grays were also observed along Carling Ave. east of Rifle
Rd. on the 6th, and in Bell's Corners in the field behind Trevor
Cr. on Feb. 27th.

The wintering pair of RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS are still in the old
burn site along Whistler Rd. in Constance Bay, the Tufted Titmouse
at the private feeder east of Almonte was also still present this
past week, and the Tufted Titmouse in Hallville south of Ottawa
was last seen approx. 2 weeks ago.

Bohemian Waxwings were reported from Trail #29 in Gatineau Park
and the Shirley's Bay area this past week, and a few Common
Redpolls at the feeders on Hilda Rd. by Shirley's Bay on the 6th
and singing House Finches in various residential areas were the
only stars in local finch reports.

Thank you - Good Birding!
