February 26/05 at about 3:30pm, we spotted a Ruffed Grouse and a Great =
Gray Owl along Ritchie Road. Both birds were in trees relatively close =
to the edge of the road. At the intersection of Ritchie Road and Upper =
Dwyer Hill Road, just past the Mississippi River, go west about 1/2 =
mile.

A small hutchinsii Cackling Goose is swimming with Canadas in the only open
water in Cobourg harbour, in the western basin, beside the main parking lot.
It was discovered by Clive Goodwin early this morning, Sunday February 27,
and has been seen by several birders since.
Otherwise there is little of note in the area, although the Northern Hawk
Owl is still regular on Hwy.2 west of Welcome, north of Port Hope.
The Lakeshore Road betwen Port Hope and Newcastle has large flocks of
singing migrant Horned Larks and several Great Gray and Barred Owls can
still be seen at dusk.

Directions:
For Cobourg harbour exit Hwy.401 at Division Street, Exit 474, and go south
on Division which ends at the harbour. Drive round the north side of the
harbour to reach the large parking lot on the west side.
For the hawk owl, exit Hwy. 401 at Port Hope/Welcome Exit 461, go north 1km
to the flashing light at Hwy.2 and turn west. Start looking on the hydro
wires at once for the next 2-3 km as the owl has been moving about a bit,
but it is seen most often just west of Kellogg Road.
(The Harris's Sparrow that was on Kellogg Road has not been seen for a
couple of weeks now.)
For Lakeshore Road, go south about 2km from Exit 461 and turn west at the
lights on Ridout Street which becomes Lakeshore Road. You can return to Hwy.
401 at Newcastle, Exit 440.
