Birders',
There is currently an overwintering Red-shouldered Hawk that has
been seen for around three weeks just outside of Hawkesville. The bird
has been hanging around in a fairly small area but can often disappear.
I have seen the bird several times at the intersection with flashing
lights two concessions north of St. Clements on Herrgot Road as it is
often perched in trees right beside the intersection.
The neighbouring fields are often productive with large numbers of
Rough-legged Hawks, Snow Buntings and sometime longspurs. There has also
been an overwintering Merlin that seems to range over a large area, so
any place could be productive in finding it.
Directions: take Hwy 85 north and exit at the second King Street exit
(where the stockyards are), follow King Street and the signs toward St.
Jacobs until you come to Lobsinger Line. Turn right or west on Lobsinger
and take this to the main intersection in St. Clements (about 8 km.)
where you turn right onto Herrgot Road. Take Herrgot Road two
concessions north to the intersection with flashing lights. Scan the
area around the intersection, or the creek bed about 400 metres up
Herrgot.
Good Luck,
