A group of 10 students and researchers from Cornell University and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology made a trip up to the Kingston area yesterday (1/29) in search of northern owls and other species.
We started at Amherst Island, catching the 10:30 ferry (with about a half-dozen each of Common and Red-breasted Merganser feeding in the open ferry channel). The BROWN THRASHER was still around the feeder area, and a male Ring-necked Pheasant was a bit of a surprise as well. Single BOREAL and NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS were seen in the Owl Woods. Several flocks of Snow Buntings were seen along various roads on the island. While gassing up, a drab immature NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen behind the Fast Freddy service station in Bath. Next we headed up north of Kingston to bird the rural roads and farm fields. We came away with 16 GREAT GRAY OWLS (along Route 14 and Road 4 mostly, but a few were on other backroads in the area. 5 PINE GROSBEAKS (all female or immature) were high in an Ash along Road 4, and a RUFFED GROUSE was feeding in a bush along Route 14. All spectacular birds, but the Great Gray experience was truly magnificent. Bob offered to take us on a hunt for owls and hunt we did. Starting at 3pm, we headed out to Division Road where we saw 3 Great Gray Owls. Then although we did not see any on the 15th Sideroad just south of Orillia, we did see four more over on Woodland Avenue; bringing our total GGOs thus far to seven. We then went to the Muley Point Road vincinity southwest of Orillia where we were treated to more GGOs than we had previously dreamed of seeing. In this area, we recorded 34 Great Gray Owls, 2 Barred Owls and 1 Robin; but we werent quite finished. On our way back home, Julie spotted a final GGO at 6:13pm on Highway 12 near West Street in Orillia. Our total count for this owling adventure was an amazing 42 Great Gray Owls, 2 Barred Owls and 1 Robin. Julie and I were and are completely thrilled with todays expedition. Thank you Bob for a wonderful birding experience we will not soon forget! Liz & Julie MacDonald (Barrie) --------------------------------- Post your free ad now! Yahoo! The owls were out in plain sight, probably disturbed by snowmobiles on the fringes of the reserve. This is one reliable place to see the owls roosting in cedar trees in front of a house across the road from your car without disturbing the birds! Directions from Jarvis on highway 6 south of Hamilton: take highway 3 east, go right on regional road 53 and left on concession road six.
