A week "in the freezer" no doubt slowed down both bird and birder activities. Nevertheless, from the 16th through the 24th, GREAT GRAY OWLS were reported from diverse locations. The largest concentration still seems to be in the rural areas west of Ottawa, but several Great Grays were also reported this week from Petrie Island and the eastern end of the Rockcliffe Parkway, as well as a few to the southwest near Carp and Richmond, farther south near Perth and Merrickville, and also in the northeast in the Val-des- Monts area of Quebec. Suburban sightings of individuals came from a backyard in Nepean, and along Moodie Dr. between the Nortel buildings and the Equestrian Park on the 17th, the Pleasant Park area of Alta Vista on the 21st, and the Fletcher Wildlife Garden on the 24th. On the 24th Snowy Owls were reported from east of Ottawa near Alfred and Ste-Rose, as well as Eagleson, Fallowfield & Akins Rds. to the west of the city. Two male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE were still on the Rideau and Ottawa Rivers as of the 22nd. On the Quebec side on the 23rd, single Bald Eagles were reported from the Lac Lablanche area north of Mayo and the Eardley Masham Rd. in Gatineau Park, and the dark-morph Red- tailed Hawk was still present at the Gatineau airport as of the 23rd as well. Back in Ontario, an American Kestrel was at the eastern end of the Rockcliffe Parkway the same day. A small covey of GRAY PARTRIDGE was discovered at Terry Fox Dr. and Maple Grove Rd. in Kanata on the 24th, and 6 Wild Turkeys were at the Duck Club feeders on March Valley and Riddell Rds. on the 21st. Five species of gulls were noted at the Trail Rd. Landfill on the 24th, including Iceland, Lesser Black-backed and Glaucous Gull. The only interesting passerine reports were of a Song Sparrow at a feeder in the Crestview neighbourhood of Nepean on the 17th and 18th, and 2 Golden-crowned Kinglets, 1 Pine Grosbeak, 6 White- winged Crossbills and 1 Pine Siskin were found in the Eardley- Masham and Lac Lablanche areas on the 23rd. Thank you - Good BRRRRding! - End transcript
