Grrrrreetings Ontbirds people & Merrrrrrry Christmas (yes, it's cold here in Ottawa!)
I am not the compiler, and the Ottawa-Gatineau CBC (19 Dec.) results have not yet been finalized, but in the "spirit of the CBC season" I thought I might post a bit of what I know (apologies to those whose birds are not mentioned, and to those who may be royally fed up with CBC results from around the province...personally, I enjoy reading them!) Total spp. found on the count: 79 + 1 hybrid (Am. Black Duck/Mallard) Possible high counts (to be confirmed): Common Goldeneye (1433) Barrow's Goldeneye (7) American Crow (11794) Some highlights: Red-necked Grebe (1) Wood Duck (1) Long-tailed Duck (1) Bufflehead (1) Bald Eagle (3) Merlin (3) Wild Turkey (5) Wilson's Snipe (1) * Lesser Black-backed Gull (1) Northern Hawk Owl (2) Great Gray Owl (5) Carolina Wren (2) Northern Mockingbird (1) Yellow-rumped Warbler (1) Some low-lights: American Kestrel (0) Peregrine Falcon (0) ** Gray Partridge (0) Finches - very low numbers... Pine Grosbeak (12) Purple Finch (21) Evening Grosbeak (0) !! only decent numbers were Common Redpoll (734) and American Goldfinch (502) Notes: * re: Wilson's Snipe...this is the 6th consecutive year (minus one year) that a Wilson's Snipe has been found in EXACTLY the same location - a warm water drainage ditch between the parking lots of the NRC & CSIS buildings at Montreal and Blair Rds. **re: Peregrine Falcon...one adult was seen in the Ottawa Centre sector, 3 days after the count, at the corner of Parkdale and Carling Aves. Final results should appear on the Ottawa Filed Naturalists' (OFNC) web site some time in the New Year. Thanks to all those Alberta Clippers for giving us a very white Christmas! Good Brrrrrding!
